WebThe Penobscot River rises in Hancock County, approximately 10 miles (16 km) east of Mount Katahdin, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. The river flows south-southeast through a series of lakes and ponds, including Chesuncook Lake, Webster Lake, and Ripogenus Lake, before entering Penobscot Lake.
